In our 2011-2012 season we continue to honor the timeless Austro-German tradition at the heart of the chamber music repertoire. The music ranges from a light-hearted string duo to Schubert’s wrenching quartet, “Death and the Maiden.” Enriching this core repertoire are works by major composers shaped by other traditions. Boccherini’s reflects his Mediterranean heritage; Dohnanyi and Bartók transform elements of Hungarian folksong; and Franck represents the distinct Franco-Belgian sensibility. BAE’s chamber music comes in all shapes and sizes: a cello/piano sonata by Beethoven; piano trios of Schubert and Schumann and a string trio of Dohnanyi; piano and string quartets of Mozart, Schubert and Bartók; and music for larger ensembles – string quintets and
sextets.
